Gibberish Hall of Fame
If you ask us, gibberish has had far too little a place in our society over the years. Why say something when you can say nothing, and so entertainingly? However, there have been some highlights of its usage in entertainment.
I stumbled across this gem on youtube, the official media sponsor of Random Ramblings. I don’t like all British humor, but this is definitely one of my favorites. No additional sarcastic remarks necessary.
Billy Madison dinner scene- Although Happy Gilmore is his best film, this classic scene from the dinner table is a prime example of gibberish being used for the comedic forces of good rather than evil
But wait. Gibberish is not just effective in video form. Pop stars have incorporated it into their songs with glorious results.
Example 1: Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin, by Michael Jackson. This song is already odd, with Michael talking about people hating a vegatable, and informing us that “the pain is thunder” (is he referring to Dr. Thunder?) But his biggest words of wisdom are “ma ma se ma ma sa moo ma coosa”. If you don’t know what that means, man, you’re gonna have to go ask your momma. I can’t help you.
Example 2: All Night Long, by Lionel Ritchie. This song contains the phrase “oh, jumbolai, cumbolita say de bo ya, yeah, jumbo jumbo”. I haven’t found an exact translation yet, but I believe this means “‘lets dance on a fake street with cops and people in pastel and we’ll all feel better!” in Swahili.
